New member on Southwoods Board - and next meetingLink to this category
Hello, all - I'm pleased to announce that our new neighbor, Grant Walker at #1579 has accepted the open position on our Board. He's been appointed to fill this slot that has been empty for several months, and the Board welcomes his participation. We'll be posting here his background and a photo, at the Contacts link at left.

Our next Board meeting will be held on Aug 17. Location will be announced soon, and posted on the white board at the entrance before the meeting. There are several items to discuss, and guests (owners and tenants) are welcome. Please email me first so we can put your topic on the agenda. Thanks. Looking forward to seeing you.

Getting the City to pick up your bulk trash itemsLink to this category
Hello again  - another note about how the City will take away your trash.

We've noticed large items "bulk" just laid out on the street for weeks. They won't be picked up in the regular trash collections, and they will ignore it. Instead, ask the City to come and get whatever it is. They'll do it.

Here's an excerpt from the City's rules about this from their website calendar:

Bulk Collection - call 410-263-7949 business hours

Large Bulk Items are collected at the curb by appointment ONLY.
Small Bulk items weighing less than 35 pounds can be placed at
the curb with your Friday morning refuse collections.

Online scheduling an appointment, go to www.annapolis.gov and under City Departments click on Public Works, then click on “Bulk Pickup-Make a Request”, then click on “Schedule Bulk Pickup”. Complete the form and submit. City staff will notify you of
your collection day.

It's easier to call - I've done it and they're very polite, and it's picked up on their special schedule - just for you.

Overall, please don't put out any trash long before pickup day, or leave trash items out, including your empty containers, after they're emptied. Please pick up any trash that fell out as well. And what they mean by "at the curb" is at the edge of the street, not on the sidewalk and not on the grass we're trying to keep green.

We need a good look to this community - always - and we, the Board members, are trying to make it that way for you.

Thanks for your help - Don Dement, President, SHAI

Community Festival coming - Sept 26Link to this category
Hello, all - Today's Sunday Capital announced a festival with street vendors, live music, food, a beer garden, activities and and an unveiling of five murals to be painted on the walls of participating buildings in the Annapolis Design District - which is adjacent to Southwoods.

The District is within Chinquapin Round, West St, Legion Ave, and Forest Drive. It's association has 50 members, who are organizing this event. They will donate their $10 charge to the Oyster Recovery Partnership, a nonprofit based in the District.

The murals have been organized by "Urban Walls," an artist exchange program. You may have noticed the new mural of Frank Lloyd Wright on the face of Kitchen Encounters up Legion Ave from here, and a big one on a building on Margaret Ave. painted in 2009.

Edgewood St will be closed between Margaret and McGuckian, but the article didn't give a time for the festival.

Let's see how this goes. Suggest you participate in any way you like, and hope to see you there.

Regards - Don Dement
President, Southwoods Homeowners Assn Inc.

The Seasons Change -- House Colors Don’tLink to this category

Southwoods has a unique paint scheme in each cul-de-sac. One of the few constants in life is the color of your house. It’s specified in the Covenants, and rules is rules. But when it’s time to paint, what do you do? You cannot just wing it.

Denny Korrot, a former Southwoods resident who has been painting many of the houses here for years, pointed us to Maryland Paint & Decorating -- a locally owned firm that’s long provided our five exact coded colors, right out on Chinquapin (ph 410-280-2225).

Remember -- all exterior changes, including painting, must be approved by the Board, in writing. Do not simply allow your contractor to choose a close color. It’s expensive to undo a project you’ve already paid for. But it has happened before, right here in Southwoods.
